HINts & TIPS Don't know your Bits from your Bytes or your Jpeg's from your Gifs? I hope this page will help with some of the mysteries of computers and the internet. I will be adding regular Hints & Tips, to hopefully take the pain and frustration out of modern technology and make it fun. So-- on with the show. The first entry is a complete Glossary of terms, which covers just about every term imaginable. Click the link below TIP.1 (PRINT SCREEN) It is possible to take a screen shot of anything appearing on your screen, in two ways. The first option will take a snapshot of everything (all open windows) and allow you to save or print this page:- On the keyboard press the Print Screen ( key (usually top right) This action places the image into the clipboard ( an area of memory on your computer) You now need to open another application for example WORD; EXCEL or indeed just about any other application. Now PASTE this into the application by either Right clicking within the open page and selecting PASTE, or by holding the Ctrl (control) key and pressing V on the keyboard. As if by magic, your screen shot will appear, whereupon you may either save it or print it out. You may also take a snapshot of only the last window to be opened on the screen. This is done by following the above procedure, but his time hold the Alt or Alt Gr key, whilst then pressing the Print Screen key. TIP.2 (OUTLOOK EXPRESS) Outlook Express sometimes has a default set whereby all new emails you respond to will have that address placed in your address book. This may not always be desirable, and indeed can be a security risk, so here is the way to prevent it.
There we are-- Job done. TIP.3 (OUTLOOK EXPRESS--ADDRESS BOOK) Did you ever go on holiday wishing you had taken a copy of your email address book, just in case you are of a mind to find an internet cafe and gloat to your friends? Follow this procedure exactly:-
This will save a .scv (comma separated value) file in your chosen location, which you can print out. It may be necessary to adjust column widths for printing. TIP.4 (WORD 2003 TO 2007 MENU CONVERSION) If you have recently upgraded to MS Office 2007,you will have noticed that the command structure has changed. Although this is a positive move, it nevertheless takes some getting used to. Here is a conversion file which shows both old and new commands. Although the file is a (.exe) it has been virus tested and is perfectly safe to open. You will have a choice to either OPEN or SAVE the file. I suggest you SAVE it somewhere for quick reference. TIP.6 (FREE PRINT SCREEN PROGRAM) If you have ever been frustrated by the Windows Print Screen facility, then this FREE program is a must download. The program takes only a few seconds to download and install. You will need to experiment a little, but I learnt the whole thing in 5 minutes and YES, it really does work. The default image is saved in .bmp format which produces a large file, I recommend you change this to .jpg and reduce the quality to about 50%. I guarantee that once you use it, you will be hooked. Be sure to hit the DOWNLOAD NOW button in the red box TIP.7 (PAGE THUMBNAIL IMAGES IN WORD) This often forgotten facility comes in handy for those producing multi page documents. If you follow the procedure to set this up, you will be able to see 'Thumbnail' images of each page on the left of the screen, in much the same way as for Power Point Presentations. Procedure:- 1-- Open a document 2--Select VIEW on the toolbar (top of screen) 3--Select Thumbnails (Word 2003) or Tick Thumbnails (Word 2007) That's it, DONE.
